A 300-year-old stone hamlet, one room at a time
Hotel Balatura began as a single restored stone manor in the village of Tribalj, inland from the Kvarner coast. Over 17 years its founders, Anne-Kathrin and Gordan Godec, extended it house by house as neighboring stone buildings were rebuilt in the same style — each addition bringing something new: a swimming pool, a seminar house, a library. The result is 19 individually decorated rooms across a small cluster of connected stone houses, every room named after a Mediterranean herb or coastal plant grown in the hotel's own gardens — lavender, lemon, olive, rosemary, laurel — so no two rooms look alike.
This is not a venue guessing at what a retreat group needs. Hotel Balatura already runs its own yearly program of yoga, meditation and creative retreats, alongside music and writing workshops and an annual arts festival — the rhythm of hosting a group that practices together, eats together and gathers in the evening is already built into how the place runs.
Green Yogi Traveler is a licensed Croatian travel agency — when you bring your group here, we handle the accommodation, transfers, meals and day-to-day logistics, so you can focus on your retreat.

Bedrooms
The 19 rooms are spread across the original stone manor and the smaller houses added around it over the years, so the walk from one room to another is genuinely a walk through the village rather than down a hotel corridor. Each is individually decorated and named after a Mediterranean herb or coastal plant from the gardens outside — a pink-washed attic room under open beams, a burgundy suite with its own fireplace, a whitewashed room with an antique wardrobe. Every room has a private en-suite bathroom, a desk, TV, free WiFi and air conditioning, and every room is bookable for single or double occupancy.

Yoga space
Two purpose-built halls are rented out for yoga and workshops. The larger is 100m² and opens directly onto its own private rooftop terrace, so a class can move from an indoor floor to open air without leaving the building. The smaller is 60m² and pairs with an outdoor platform set into the lawn — better suited to a smaller group or a more intimate workshop. Hotel Balatura already runs its own annual calendar of Iyengar, Luna Yoga, Katonah and meditation retreats in these two spaces, so a visiting teacher is stepping into a rhythm the venue already knows well.
Interior
Indoors, the stone walls stay exposed throughout — a dining room warmed by an old wood stove, a library stacked floor to ceiling with books under the original beams, a breakfast room, and a scatter of sitting rooms and reading nooks tucked into the old walls. It reads more like a lived-in family home passed down and expanded than a hotel built to a template.
Vinodol Valley, Kvarner, Croatia
Tribalj sits inland in the Vinodol Valley, part of Croatia's Kvarner region — karst hills and forest around the hotel, with the Adriatic close enough for a beach afternoon and Rijeka, Krk Island and the mountains of Gorski Kotar all within reach for a day trip.
Risnjak National Park
Forested mountains and a clear turquoise spring lake in Gorski Kotar, a short drive from the hotel — one of Croatia's quietest national parks.
Krk Island beaches
Croatia's largest island, connected by bridge, with pebble coves and clear water — an easy beach day for the group.
Rijeka
Kvarner's biggest city and Croatia's main port, with a lively old town, waterfront promenade and university-town energy.
Cycling the karst hills
Quiet gravel and forest tracks through the Vinodol hills straight from the hotel's own door, with sea views from the ridgelines.
Getting your group there
Rijeka Airport (RJK) is the closest, roughly 30–40 minutes by road. Zagreb is a further option for guests connecting through Croatia's capital, about 1.5–2 hours away by car. Crikvenica on the coast is just 6 km away for a beach day without a long transfer. Send us the flight numbers once your guests have booked and we arrange the transfers.
A vegetarian kitchen built around the valley
Hotel Balatura's own restaurant is vegetarian and vegan, led by a chef who grew up in the Vinodol valley and cooks with what comes from it — local produce prepared with contemporary technique rather than a generic hotel buffet. Vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free needs are all standard requests here, not a special ask.
Breakfast runs 7–11am, lunch 12–2pm and dinner 7–9:30pm, all served on site — dinner is typically a three-course vegetarian or vegan menu. Meals for retreat groups are agreed with you in advance, so the kitchen already knows what half your group can and can't eat before anyone arrives.
Questions retreat leaders ask about this venue
Is Hotel Balatura an exclusive-use venue or a regular hotel?
It operates as a working hotel year-round, so unlike a private villa it can also have other guests staying at the same time unless your group books out the whole property. For most retreat groups we block a set number of rooms across the village; full exclusive use is possible for larger groups and is confirmed with the hotel at the time of booking.
How many rooms does Hotel Balatura have?
19 rooms in total, spread across the original 300-year-old manor and several later-restored stone houses that were added to the village over time. They come in three tiers — standard rooms without a balcony, rooms with their own balcony or terrace, and suites — each bookable for single or double occupancy. Every room is individually decorated and named after a Mediterranean herb or coastal plant grown in the hotel's own gardens, and each has its own private en-suite bathroom.
Is there a dedicated space for yoga and workshops?
Yes — two purpose-built halls. The larger is 100m² and opens directly onto its own private rooftop terrace; the smaller is 60m² and pairs with an outdoor platform set into the lawn, better suited to a smaller group or a more intimate workshop. The hotel already runs its own annual program of Iyengar, Luna Yoga, Katonah and meditation retreats in these two spaces, so the rhythm of a retreat week is already familiar territory for the whole team.
What is the food like at Hotel Balatura?
Vegetarian and vegan, built around ingredients from the Vinodol valley itself, with gluten-free and lactose-free options available on request. The kitchen is led by a chef who grew up in the region. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all served on site, and menus can be built around your group's specific dietary needs.
How far is Hotel Balatura from the sea?
About 6 km to Crikvenica on the Adriatic coast — close enough for a beach afternoon, far enough that the hotel itself sits in quiet countryside rather than a busy coastal resort strip.
Which airport is closest to Hotel Balatura?
Rijeka Airport (RJK), roughly 30–40 minutes by road. Zagreb is a further option for guests connecting through Croatia's capital, around 1.5–2 hours by car.
Has this venue hosted retreats before?
Yes, regularly — Hotel Balatura already runs its own yearly calendar of yoga, meditation and creative retreats, alongside music and writing workshops and an annual arts festival. It is not a hotel adapting itself to retreats for the first time.
